Shortly after it was founded in 1899, it evolved into a meeting place for Viennese artists with cult status.

The former regular café of Thomas Bernhard, Café Bräunerhof, is located in the heart of the Old City antiques district between the Imperial Palace and Graben. There is live piano in the historic ambience, with operettas, swing and jazz evergreens (Fr, Sa, Su 16:00-20:00).Īt Café Sperl, which opened in 1880, Thonet chairs, marble tables and crystal chandeliers create a timelessly elegant ambience that opera lovers appreciate as a way to get in the mood for a performance at the nearby Theater an der Wien. Piano music entertains guests on Sunday starting at 15:30. The Weimar concert café near the Volksoper has been around since 1900 – and remains a popular meeting place for audiences and artists alike.
